Filing relates to student injuries and hospitalizations following reported multi-day physical discipline
WACO, TX / ACCESS Newswire / April 13, 2026 / Twelve families have filed a lawsuit against Texas Leadership Charter Academy (TLCA), Texas Leadership Public Schools, CEO/Superintendent Walt Landers, and current and former employees under newly revised Chapter 118 of the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code, which expands civil rights against school districts and their employees for failing to report abuse. The complaint was filed in the 193rd Judicial District Court of Dallas County, Texas, under Cause No. DC-26-06347.
The filing relates to a civil matter involving student athletes who, according to the complaint, were subjected to conditioning activities over consecutive days, resulting in injuries requiring medical treatment, including hospitalization and ongoing care.
The complaint also references matters related to school policies, supervision and administrative actions following the incident. It further references the inclusion of a liability waiver in enrollment materials after the events at issue.
The plaintiffs are seeking compensatory damages for medical expenses, pain and suffering and other alleged losses. The lawsuit also seeks punitive damages and other relief available under Texas law.
“This lawsuit seeks to address concerns related to student health, safety and obligations to report suspected abuse,” said Ryan C. Johnson of Cherry Johnson Siegmund James. “Our clients are pursuing this matter through the legal process and look forward to presenting their claims in court.”
